Just when we thought our gut was totally killing it these days we now know the one thing it’s missing. Prebiotics. Nope, not probiotics, but pre-biotics and, yes, there’s a difference. We didn’t know that either.
We’re fresh off our mushroom coffee experiment and like everything in the health supplement market, there’s now a new trend. And if you thought you were up to your creaky elbows in vitamins already, there’s another you can add to your list; prebiotic gummies. Hey, at least the “gummy” trend is still going strong because we basically feel like we’re eating a little candy each and every morning.
So what is this all about, you ask? Well, we’re clearly not doctors around here so we’re not here to make any claims. However, we did consult with actual doctors over at Healthline and we learned a lot.
In easy to digest terms (pun sort of intended), a prebiotic acts as food for the healthy bacteria in your gut. We, of course, want to protect ourselves from harmful bacteria. Duh! And good bacteria (yes, it’s a thing) just may help with improving some symptoms of depression, may help with weight loss and weight related issues, may help reduce inflammation, may help lower cholesterol, and may help improve bowel movements. Hooray to all of that!
Basically, according to the experts, prebiotics will act as fertilizers that’ll help stimulate the growth of your healthy bacteria. They can be found in all kinds of fruits and vegetables with complex carbohydrates but, let’s be real, we’d rather just take a gummy and be done with it. Yeah?
So that’s exactly what we did. First, of course, we researched some of the best on the market. Luckily we did at least know some of the brand names, so that was a good start. One of the main problems we found, however, was that most brands out there are either strictly probiotics or a combo of both. It’s tough to find gummies that are strictly prebiotic. But, don’t worry, we did find some.
Right now the two major brands crushing it in this space, you probably already heard of. We’re talking about Yuve and Olly. We wanted to be strict about it, so we went with Yuve (more on them below). Here’s the thing. Gummies taste good and, TBH, do you ever actually feel a difference when taking them? Not always. But at least you know you’re doing something good. Hopefully.
Overall, we liked it. However, that could be because they typically taste like candy….and that’s always a great way to start your morning! And we can’t be alone because a recent study suggests the prebiotic market is projected to grow to $9.4 billion (yes, billion) by 2027. Wait, are we late to the game?!
Hopefully this isn’t TMI, but we always seem to have some kind of issue with our stomach and, at times bathroom habits. After test-driving these for about a month we think we actually have had less overall digestive issues. Honestly, not like life-changing, but we did notice at least a small difference. Did it help with our weight? Well, we were also exercising about 3-4 days a week (go us!) so we did drop a couple of pounds – but can’t say, for sure, it was because of the vitamin. Either way, we’ll take it!
We’ll probably keep taking them because we’re a sucker for a trend and we’re a sucker for a gummy. Our final verdict? So, do it!
