It’s official, guys are obsessed with all things Spicebomb by Viktor & Rolf. And, to be honest, we can’t blame them.
We were a bit skeptical when it came time to try out Spicebomb. At the time the only one we were aware of was the original and by the time we heard of it we felt that we missed the boat and there was probably too much hype around it anyway. People were obsessing over the bottle and, yep, once we saw it so were we. There was just something about that bottle that looked so different than any other cologne bottle we’d seen before and we almost wanted it just for that. The spoiler alert is that we did try the original Spicebomb not too long ago and were surprised at the scent the moment we sprayed it. We gave it a virtual eye-roll because at first we didn’t see what the fuss was about. Uh, and then we let it sit for a couple of minutes and we were instantly hooked. It was intoxicating, addictive, and comforting all at the same time. The scent is like nothing we’ve experienced before and we immediately wanted more. Sure, that’s what addicts say too. We’re ok with that.
Since then, the fine folks over at Victor & Rolf have come out with a couple more versions: Spicebomb Extreme and Spicebomb Fresh. Both, of course, also have insanely cool bottles but we’ll get to them in a minute. Here’s the breakdown of the original Spicebomb.
Original Spicebomb Cologne by Viktor & Rolf – Buy It Here
This original is just that…original. When you spray it it’s literally like a wonderful burst of spices mixed with zesty freshness exploding all over the place (without the messy cleanup). How so many different notes can mix together beautifully in one intoxicating aroma is more than our little mind can compute.
Spicebomb has top notes of bergamot, pink pepper, elemi, and grapefruit (all giving it its wonderful freshness). Its middle notes include cinnamon, saffron, and chili pepper (all giving it its addictive spice). The base notes include tobacco, leather, and vetiver (all giving it its masculinity and comfort at the same time).
Sure you can wear this one any time of year, but for us it was perfect in the fall and winter and great transition into early spring. There’s just something so comforting about it.
Next Up: Spicebomb Extreme Cologne – Buy It Here
If you like the original, but wanted a little something more then this is the one for you. There’s something about Extreme that just brings the heat. While we love regular Spicebomb, this one is just almost sexier. You feel like you’re about to do something bad, but in a good way. We’re not talking about jail time or anything. Unless you’re into that. We don’t judge.
To make this a bit spicier, Viktor & Rolf added top notes of black pepper, pimento berries, and grapefruit. The middle notes consist of cumin, saffron, and cinnamon. While the base notes are a bit more woodsy and earthy than the original, including tobacco accord, black vanilla, woody amber, and cistus. If we have one complaint about this one is that it’s a bit strong. It’s not too strong, but sometimes we may spray one too many times and then it’s like, “Yeah that was too much.” On the flip side, it’ll last you a long time because you don’t need to use as much. A real silver lining.
Finally: Spicebomb Fresh Cologne – Buy It Here
With the original Spicebomb and Spicebomb Extreme being perfect for the cooler months, our guess is that Spicebomb Fresh was the answer to spring and summer. We liked this one because it kept us feeling clean and awake like we just jumped out of the shower. It’s also perfect to toss in your gym bag after a workout or hide in your desk if you just need a little pick-me-up during the day (again, that’s the addict talking).
If you loved the spiciness of the others then you’ll love the freshness of this one. Its top notes include grapefruit, pink pepper and pimento. The middle notes are lavender, salt crystal, and elemi. And its base note consist of moss, amber complex, and tobacco. So you’re still getting the nostalgia of the original Spicebomb, but in a much cleaner and fresher fragrance.
So what’s the right one for you? That’s for you to decide. They’re all pretty decent choices. We feel like it just depends on the intensity of the cologne you want. It’s like a small, medium, and large. Small = Original. Medium = Fresh. Large = Extreme.
